I think that Elie should have traded his shoes for a good unit and being with his father. Eli was really smart to not go to the dentist and to tell the dentist that he had a fever when they wanted to take his tooth until the doctor was no longer at the camp,  but ironic that later on the foreman realized he had his tooth still and made a doctor take it out with a rusty spoon, its sad that he took out his frustration with Elie on Eli's father.
