this section is where you first start to see the greatest loss of Elis faith in God, during Rosh Hashanna Elie   doesn't participate in the traditional New Year activities. He also doesn't fast for the Day of Atonement in fear of starvation and dying but also in defiance.for the  'New Year's gift' by the SS the Jews had to participate in selection. It  was hard enough to read how Eli's father first thought that he had passed selection, realized that he hadn't but then pass the final selection. I imagine that Elie was pleased but probably felt emotionally drained.
