I think it's odd that SS men told Eli that he should be 18 not 15 when they arrived at Auschwitz off of the train it almost seems as if he was trying to protect him but yet they're still very violent and demeaning. in this section he talks about how the first night in Auschwitz  turned the rest of his life into one long night, which is also the title of the book. 3 weeks after their arrival at Auschwitz Eli and his father are forced to move camps and go to buna after a four hour walk.
